I rarely used a phone until I was coerced to.
Not only do I not wear a watch, own a TV, wear a tie or belt, I also do not carry a phone.
Those around me were particularly annoyed by the last one, as they were not able to contact me.
A plan was concocted. They bought me a phone from Japan. It is indeed a phone. Except it is one attached to a baby walker by Combi. Each key on the keypad, when pressed, gives off an amusing sound - a barking dog, meowing cat, quacking duck, mooing cow, chirping bird, honking car… The rule was that I carry this phone until I get myself a real one.
They thought this would make me. Rather than feeling awkward however, I actually liked it and carried it with me. I even used it in public. It relaxed not only myself but brought laughter to those around me - especially when I held it the wrong side up, or pressed the keypad.

This afternoon, I passed on the humor, the phone, and of course, the walker, to an eight-month-old girl. I hope she will enjoy it too.

僕はほとんど電話を使わない。あの日までは。。。
腕時計はつけない、テレビやネクタイ、ベルトも電話も使わない。
大抵はみんな笑ってるけど、電話に関しては「連絡がとれない！と」周りの人が困り果てていた。
ある日、みんなのジョークで電話が送られてきた。
日本からコンビのベビーウォーカーに付いている赤い電話。
ボタンを押すと色んな音が出てくる。イヌの鳴き声にネコやあひる、うぐいすや車のクラクション
メッセージは「本物の携帯を持つまではこれを持ち歩け。」との事でした。
僕に携帯を持たせたくてここまでやったんだろうけど、この電話が気に入った。外に持ち歩いて、人前でボタンを押すとみんなが笑う。
もしこの風景を見た覚えのある人へ、誰だ？と思いました？それはアメオです。
今日の午後、ジョークの為に使ってきた電話は（ベビーウォーカーと共に）８ヶ月の女の子の所へ届けられました。気に入ってくれるといいな。

Leg Through the Diamond Frame
I was 7
The first time I rode an adult bicycle*
a heavy old bike with only one gear
Too small for it
so I put my right leg through the diamond frame**
with my right arm clinging onto the saddle
It is called “sankaku-nori” (triangle riding) in Japanese
The bicycle wobbled at a snail’s pace
I would not mind
Clinging onto it without falling
for a short few seconds
was a proud achievement
Each fall onto the rough asphalt concrete
would result in new bruises…
on me
I would try to reach the ground before the bike did
because I did not want any dents on the bike
however old it was
The joy of riding
or, rather, clinging,
on this big bicycle
was more than the concern of
each increasing bruise
My age has multiplied many times of that “7″

Ameo style: no saddle, no remote gear shifter, no shoes…
Yes, I will be parting with the bike, and most of my belongings soon too.
* that is why the remote shifter is still new — because I do not use it.
* adult bicycle: what I called a common utility bicycle when I was little.
* diamond frame: Upright bicycles without a step-through frame
* leg through the diamond frame: When a child is too short to ride an adult bicycle, he has to clamp the saddle between his arm and the side of his torso while reaching to hold the handle with both hands. Some kids did that when I was little. Rarely seen now.
* I often rode a bike without a saddle when I was little. I still do so every now and then. Is it illegal in Australia? Helmet is mandatory, what about a saddle?
* That is why the remote gear shifter is still new. I like to recall the one gear feeling when I was little so I removed it.
* My writing reveals my inner world. The way I interact with the surroundings - be they people, nature, or my belongings. The joy of meeting, and the sadness of parting.
